We are moving fast in 5th grade. We have lots of things happening in our classroom. In Math we are working on Fractions making equivalent fractions, identifying mixed numbers and improper fractions, please practice these skills with your child at home. The students are making progress but we still have work to do. Next week we will start adding and subtracting fractions with like and unlike denominators. Students need to know there basic multiplication and division facts in order to do understand fractions . In Reading we are working on cause and effect, character traits and feelings, persuasion, conclusions and generalizations, and main ideas and details for Unit 3 in our Journeys Textbook. In Science we are learning about Body Systems and parts of cells. Student will have a project to complete at home for making a plant or animal cell. And last but not least in Social Studies we are learning about Colonization and Settlement. We are learning about different explorers and why they were exploring. It is important for students to read at home everyday so that they can become better readers by the end of the year. Several students are still struggling to read basic sight words and it is causing them to not understand what they are reading. When your child reads at home ask your child to give you a summary of what they read. Reading is used in all subjects so we need our babies to read in order to well in all subjects.
